5 Things You Should Know About Invisalign

Invisalign Isn’t an Option for Everyone

At our Bayside, NY dentist’s office, we have found that Invisalign is a great orthodontic solution for many people who want to fix their smile. Unfortunately, it isn’t an option for everyone. Keep reusing to find out more about it and then call us at 718-395-5331 to explore your options with Dr. Bram.

Typically, Invisalign works best for people with milder orthodontal issues such as:

  • Mild or moderate overcrowding, making the teeth harder to clean
  • Minor spacing problems, such as gaps between the teeth

Invisalign can effectively reposition teeth but may not work if you have a severe bite problem. Moderate to severe underbites, overbites, and crossbites as well as major spacing issues may need a more advanced orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign Requires Discipline

Invisalign trays are removable. That’s one of the many things Invisalign patients like about this particular treatment. But because they can be removed at any time, an Invisalign orthodontic treatment requires a good amount of discipline.

To work properly, the only time Invisalign trays should be removed is when you eat or brush and floss your teeth. Otherwise, Invisalign should be worn at least 20 hours a day. With a little bit of an adjustment, most people can adjust to an Invisalign treatment in no time.

Invisalign Is Typically More Comfortable than Metal Braces

Traditional braces use metal brackets that are glued to your teeth and wires to connect them. This can cause quite a bit of discomfort, especially when you first start wearing them. They can also irritate your lips or cheeks. By wearing clear plastic aligners, these issues can typically be avoided.

Invisalign aligners are thin, smooth, and are removed when you eat, so discomfort isn’t as much of an issue.

You May Have to Adjust Your Eating Habits

Because Invisalign aligners are removable, you can eat and drink just about anything. However, you still may want to think twice about eating or drinking certain foods. Even with your aligners in, you can drink water, but that’s about it. Drinking coffee, tea, and other beverages could stain and discolor your aligners, meaning they would no longer be clear like they’re known for.

Additionally, eating certain foods and then wearing your aligners after, even if you brush your teeth, can cause your aligners to become infected with bacteria and develop a stench. It’s better to avoid those foods and drinks throughout your Invisalign treatment.

The Length of An Invisalign Treatment Varies

In most cases, Invisalign aligners are worn for 2 weeks each before being replaced with a new pair. Throughout your Invisalign treatment, you will need to visit your dentist every six weeks or so for a checkup and examination. During your checkups, we will check to make sure your treatment is progressing the way it should.

The average Invisalign treatment requires approximately 20-24 sets of aligners, which means the average treatment lasts about a year. Considering treatment with traditional braces can take two years or longer, Invisalign is typically the faster treatment option.
